Title

A Descriptive Study to Assess the Spread of Infection Due to Delayed Cannula Replacement Among Adult Patients Admitted in Pushpanjali Hospital and Research Centre, Agra

Abstract

Intravenous (IV) cannulation is a common hospital procedure used for administering fluids, medications, and nutrition. However, delayed replacement of IV cannulas can increase the risk of local and systemic infections. This descriptive study aimed to assess the spread of infection due to delayed cannula replacement among adult patients admitted in Pushpanjali Hospital and Research Centre, Agra. A total of 60 patients aged 18–60 years with peripheral IV cannulation were included. Data were collected using an observational checklist and infection assessment proforma. The findings revealed that 45% of patients developed mild to moderate infection signs such as redness, pain, or swelling after 72 hours of cannula use, while 15% developed severe signs including pus formation and fever. The study concludes that regular cannula replacement within recommended time intervals (every 48–72 hours) significantly reduces infection risk. Continuous staff training and monitoring are essential for infection prevention in hospital settings.
