Title

Design and Experimental Validation of a Cyber-Ergonomic Adaptive Seat System for Real-Time Vibration and Posture Control in Agricultural Tractors

Abstract

Agriculture remains the foundation of India’s economy, with tractors serving as the most vital tool in modern farming. Yet, despite their indispensable role, tractor operators face serious health challenges due to continuous exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and poor ergonomic design. Long hours of operation on uneven terrain often result in chronic spinal pain, poor posture, muscle fatigue, and long-term musculoskeletal disorders. Field surveys conducted across eleven districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar revealed that vibration levels in commonly used tractors range between 1.2 and 1.8 m/s², far exceeding the safe exposure limit of 0.8 m/s² defined by ISO 2631-1:1997. Nearly 90% of surveyed operators reported regular back discomfort or postural strain. To address this issue, the present study proposes an innovative Smart Adaptive S-Type Seat System designed specifically for Indian tractors. The system integrates vibration, posture, and load sensors with a microcontroller-based control unit that automatically adjusts seat stiffness according to field conditions. The setup also includes a digital monitoring interface, available as both a mobile app and an integrated dashboard meter for users without smartphones, displaying real-time vibration intensity, posture status, RPM, speed, fuel level, battery health, engine temperature, and rest alerts. Field trials demonstrated significant improvement in operator comfort and posture stability. The adaptive damping system effectively reduced transmitted vibration by over 30%, while the posture alert mechanism helped operators maintain correct sitting positions during prolonged work. This smart seat concept offers an affordable, self-sustaining, and ergonomic solution that enhances both operator safety and agricultural productivity. By combining renewable energy with intelligent control and health monitoring, the proposed system represents a step toward safer, technology-driven farming practices in India.
