Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of life sciences and medicine, traces its origin back to the Vedas. Within this system, Agni is described as a fundamental factor governing digestion and metabolism in the human body. Agni is considered responsible for strength, vitality, health, and longevity, as well as for determining the appropriate quantity of food to be consumed. The processes of digestion, absorption, and assimilation of ingested food—essential for sustaining life—are attributed to Agni. In Ayurveda, the term Agni encompasses both the digestion of food and the metabolism of nutrients.Based on its functions and sites of action, Agni is classified into thirteen types: one Jatharagni, five Bhutagni, and seven Dhatvagni. Emphasizing its importance, Acharya Charaka stated that the cessation of Agni’s function results in death, while a balanced (sama) state of Agni ensures complete health, strength, and longevity. Conversely, when Agni becomes vitiated, the entire metabolic system is disturbed, leading to disease and ill health. Therefore, Agni is regarded as the very foundation (mool) of life.
