Title

AI Integrated VTOL UAV For Precision Payload Delivery and Pickup in Dynamic Terrains: A Review of Technology, Challenges, and Future Directions

Abstract

This review comprehensively explores the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in enabling autonomous, precision payload delivery and retrieval across heterogeneous and dynamic terrains. By integrating state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms, multi-sensor fusion frameworks, and telemetry-based winch mechanisms, these systems are redefining operational paradigms in complex, GPS-denied environments. The analysis emphasizes critical engineering dimensions, including aerodynamic optimization for hover stability, adaptive path planning under uncertain conditions, and robust obstacle avoidance in cluttered airspace. Furthermore, performance indices such as energy efficiency, mission resilience, and payload placement accuracy are critically examined. The review identifies persistent challenges—ranging from wind disturbance mitigation and computational load balancing to fail-safe architectures for autonomous logistics—and evaluates emerging solutions, such as neuromorphic computing and explainable AI. This work articulates a forward-looking perspective on the transformative role of AI-integrated VTOL UAVs in revolutionizing humanitarian aid, disaster response, and precision logistics.

Key Words
