With the growing importance of safety in everyday life, biometric recognition has emerged as a significant research field due to its potential in personal identification. Among various security systems, biometric detection stands out as one of the most reliable. Biometric systems identify and authenticate individuals using unique physical characteristics. Over the past decade, iris recognition has become a key focus in this area. The most challenging tasks in iris recognition are segmentation and classification, since poor performance in these steps can undermine the system’s effectiveness. Variations in image properties—such as pigmentation, brightness, contrast, and occlusions caused by eyelids or eyelashes—along with differences in sensors and environmental conditions, make iris segmentation particularly difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new and efficient algorithms to overcome these challenges. This paper reviews recent research directions in iris recognition.
