Title

INVESTIGATION OF CYCLIC BRAKE NOISE AT LOW SPEED

Abstract

In recent years, brake noise has become one of the top automotive warranty concerns. One of them is cyclic noise during gradual braking at low speed which is more irritating and annoying during vehicle running due to its repetitive nature. It is important to find out contribution of key design parameters causing cyclic noise. Sound is created by vibration, in this case nonlinear interaction between wheel rim and brake disc resulting in vibrations which is possibly leading to frequencies above human audible range. The main hurdle in this case is re-production of noise on vehicle level with repetitive trials. In this paper, we will use various tools for analysis like NVH measurment, data layering, CAE analysis, dynamometer verification, QC story methodology and Shainin design of experiment methods to identify parameters associated with cyclic brake noise. Experiments were carried out to understand the effect of wheel rim stiffness, wheel rim to brake disc contact area. Finally, comparative study performed on the dynamometer test and vehicle level for proposed actions before implementation. The results shows that the failure rate has been reduced and service life also increased.
