Title

Analysis of Ionospheric TEC and Scintillation Over Hyderabad Using GNSS Observations

Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) and scintillation on GNSS signal integrity over Hyderabad, a low-latitude region known for dynamic ionospheric behavior. Using dual-frequency GPS/GNSS observations collected over a five successive days, diurnal and temporal TEC variations were monitored and correlated with amplitude and phase scintillation indices. The methodology employed robust algorithms for TEC estimation and introduced an analogous phase scintillation index for improved assessment. Results demonstrate prominent TEC peaks during afternoon hours due to enhanced photoionization and frequent post-sunset scintillation events linked to plasma bubble formation. Both amplitude (S4) and phase indices showed consistent patterns with satellite elevation and geomagnetic activity. The findings validate the reliability of the a-index as a monitoring metric and highlight implications for satellite navigation accuracy in equatorial regions. These insights contribute to GNSS error mitigation strategies and enhance regional reliability for critical positioning services.
