Title

Assessing the Impact of Heavy Metals on Arthrospira platensis: Growth Dynamics, Pigment Composition and Detoxifying Enzyme Activities

Abstract

Abstract This study evaluates the impact of copper (Cu) stress on cell biomass, pigment profiles, and the oxidative response of Arthrospira platensis following a 96-hour exposure. Exponentially growing A. platensis cultures were subjected to Cu concentrations of 0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 µg/mL in Zarrouk medium. Increasing Cu concentrations resulted in a progressive, dose-dependent reduction in biomass, photosynthetic pigments, carbohydrate, and protein contents. Notably, superoxide radical (SOR) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels showed no significant increase at the lowest Cu concentration (0.6 µg/mL), but exhibited marked elevation at higher concentrations, underscoring the onset of oxidative stress. In response, heightened activity of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD), as well as increased proline accumulation, was observed, indicating activation of the organism’s antioxidative defense mechanisms. These results provide valuable facts for elucidating the physiological adaptations of A. platensis under copper exposure, and highlight its suitability for environmental pollutant monitoring and toxicity risk assessment
