ABSTRACT In India's Ayurvedic, Unani, and traditional folk medicine systems, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels (family Myrtaceae), additionally referred to as Jamun or Indian blackberry, is generally acknowledged for its therapeutic usage in treating a variety of skin conditions, especially hyperpigmentation, blemishes, and dark spots. Its leaf paste and extracts are used by traditional healers to treat conditions that resemble melasma and to encourage fair skin. Flavonoids, phenolic acids, and tannins, particularly myricetin, are abundant in the leaves and have been linked to the regulation of melanogenesis by blocking tyrosinase activity. Its promise as a topical depigmenting agent has not received much scientific support, despite this conventional assertion. By creating and testing a herbal antipigmentation cream based on Syzygium cumini leaves, this study seeks to close the gap between traditional knowledge and experimental pharmacology.
