Title

Preventing Hysterectomy through Ayurveda: A Case Based Approach in Uterine Fibroid Management

Abstract

Garbhashaya Arbuda (uterine fibroid) is one of the most common benign uterine growths affecting women of reproductive age. Globally, the prevalence of uterine fibroids ranges between 20–40% in women aged 30–50 years, with a higher incidence reported among Indian women. In Āyurveda, Garbhashaya Arbuda is described as a localized māṃsa granthi or arbuda resulting from the vitiation of Vāta and Kapha along with Rakta dhātu involvement. Clinically, uterine fibroids manifest with ātidaruna rajaḥpravṛtti (menorrhagia), śūla (pain), lower abdominal heaviness, and pāṇḍutva (anemia), significantly affecting the quality of life. Modern management primarily includes hormonal therapy and surgical procedures such as myomectomy or hysterectomy, which may pose recurrence risks and threaten fertility. In contrast, Āyurveda provides a safe, holistic, and fertility-preserving management approach through Kapha–Vāta śamana, Rakta prasadana, and Granthi hara principles. This case study presents a conservatively managed case of symptomatic uterine fibroid using Āyurvedic chikitsā, demonstrating notable improvement in clinical symptoms, hemoglobin levels, and reduction in fibroid size. The case emphasizes the integrative potential of Āyurveda in managing Garbhashaya Arbuda with internal medications, pathya–apathya (diet and lifestyle), and supportive yoga therapy.
