Title

INCREASE IN RUNOFF DUE TO LAND USE CHANGE URBAN REGION OF PANDHARPUR

Abstract

Urban expansion in Pandharpur over recent decades has substantially altered the city’s land-use patterns, leading to significant hydrological changes. This study examines the impact of land-use and land-cover (LULC) transformations on surface runoff in the urban region of Pandharpur. Remote sensing data for multiple time periods reveal a marked increase in built-up area accompanied by a decline in vegetation and open land. The replacement of permeable surfaces with impervious urban structures has reduced infiltration capacity and accelerated overland flow. Using hydrological assessment methods, the study indicates that urbanization has likely produced a notable rise in both total runoff volume and peak discharge during rainfall events. These changes heighten the risks of urban flooding, reduce groundwater recharge, and intensify pressure on local water resources. The findings underscore the necessity of integrating hydrological considerations into future urban planning and adopting green-infrastructure strategies to mitigate runoff-related impacts in Pandharpur.
