This paper examines the distinctive nature of Indian federalism, tracing its evolution from ancient and mediaeval governance structures to the constitutional framework established in 1950. It highlights the quasi-federal character of India’s system, where power is shared between the Centre and the States but with a clear tilt towards central authority. The study explains the distribution of legislative powers through the Union, State, and Concurrent Lists, and analyses key constitutional doctrines such as the Doctrine of Territorial Nexus and the Doctrine of Pith and Substance. Through historical insights and judicial interpretations, the paper explores how India balances regional autonomy with national unity in a diverse socio-political landscape.
