The Indian credit-card market is experiencing a healthy growth, driven by rising incomes and banks’ aggressive issuance strategies. In 2025, the value of credit card/ charge-card transactions is projected to be more than ₹25.4 Lakh Crores (Approx. US$300 billion). The number of cards in force is expected to nearly double to 200 million by Financial Year 2029, with a growth rate of more than 15% CAGR. Now, the credit card companies are focusing on expanding their markets in tier-2 and tier 3 cities rigorously. But, at the same time, some challenges are emerging which include rising outstanding balances and default risks. The credit card companies are also operating in a competitive environment which includes UPI and other digital payments modes which are offering ‘buy now pay later’ options which are creating pressure on credit card issuers forcing them to innovate to new ways to reach their potential customers. Overall, the credit-card market in India is large and growing, but requires more disciplined underwriting and deeper penetration for sustainable long-term expansion.
