Title

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT ON DIABETES MELLITUS (PRAMEHA) -A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a syndrome of chronic hyperglycemia due to relative insulin deficiency, resistance or both. The international diabetes federation (IDF) estimated that 382 million people (8.3 % of the global population) had diabetes in 2013 and estimates an increase to 592 million (10.1%) in 20351. Diabetes is generally irreversible and although patients can lead a reasonably normal lifestyle, its late complications results in reduced life expectancy and major health costs. The preventive measures in Ayurveda can prevent the disease. The main causative factor is said to be sedentary lifestyle and food habits. This report is about a case in which successful reversal of diabetes mellitus was achieved in a patient who reported with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) as high as 10.9%. The patient had diabetes mellitus symptoms viz. fatigue, frequent urination, indigestion, excessive thirst, stout body and his weight was 132 kg. His fasting plasma glucose level was 138mg/dl and post prandial glucose level of 209 mg/dl, thus diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Based on his specific clinical symptoms the patient was diagnosed with kaphaja prameha2.Which can be managed conservatively with exercise, diet and internal medication. Treatment was given according to classical Ayurveda intervention for kaphaja prameha. The patient responded well to the Ayurvedic treatment. His HbA1C reduced to 6.4% in a span of five months. The case report shows the effectiveness of Ayurvedic intervention in diabetes mellitus.
