The study discusses a creative approach to preserving Kavad art, an age-old storytelling tradition from Rajasthan, through incorporating its visual vocabulary into hand-dyed textile products. Conventionally, a Kavad is a multi-panel wooden shrine painted with vibrant scenes depicting myths, genealogies, and moral narratives. Over the last couple of decades, this art form has declined since there are very few practitioners left, and their cultural context has changed. The objective of this project is to translate the symbolic and narrative qualities of Kavad motifs onto naturally dyed cotton scarves, while investigating a newly developed embroidery technique for increasing their aesthetic value.
