Title

Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization and Biological Evaluation of Transition Metal Complexes Derived from Pyridyl-Based Schiff Bases

Abstract

A new series of Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes derived from pyridyl-based Schiff bases were synthesized and characterized. The Schiff bases were obtained through the condensation of pyridine derivatives with salicylaldehyde, forming tridentate N, O-donor ligands capable of effective coordination with metal ions. The synthesized Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, infrared (IR), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Spectral and magnetic data suggest an octahedral geometry around the metal centers. The antibacterial activity of the ligands and their corresponding metal complexes was evaluated against selected bacterial strains. The results revealed that metal complexation significantly enhanced the antibacterial potency compared to the free ligands, which can be attributed to the chelation-induced increase in lipophilicity and permeability through bacterial cell membranes. These findings indicate that pyridyl–salicylidene Schiff base complexes of Cu(II) and Ni(II) possess promising antibacterial properties with potential applications in medicinal chemistry.
