A STUDY ON THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF ELDER ABUSE IN KRISHNA DISTRICT OF ANDHRA PRADESH
Abstract
Census data in 1991 recorded 55 million persons aged 60 and over, representing 6.5 per cent of the total population. Life expectancy at birth has reached 62 years. The increase in the elderly population between 1951 and 1991 (38%) was greater than for the general population (18.9%) (WHO, 2004). With weak public pension and social security systems as well as changing household structures, planning for the elderly especially in terms of living arrangements assumes increasingly greater importance (UNFPA, 2011).
