Title

A Systems Biology and Ayurvedic Perspective on the Bidirectional Relationship between COVID-19 and Metabolic Syndrome: Decoding Chronic Inflammation as the Common Denominator

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the critical vulnerability of individuals with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), characterized by obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Current research suggests a bidirectional relationship: MetS predisposes individuals to severe COVID-19 outcomes, while SARS-CoV-2 infection exacerbates metabolic dysfunction. This paper integrates modern pathological insights with Ayurvedic principles, proposing that Chronic Inflammation (CI) serves as the fundamental bridge between these two conditions. Drawing from Ayurvedic concepts of Mandagni (metabolic dysfunction), Ama (metabolic toxicity), and Srotorodha (channel obstruction), we analyze how metabolic disorders create a "fertile terrain" (Khavaigunya) for viral pathogenesis. Furthermore, we propose a precision medicine protocol utilizing "Response to Challenge" models and validate specific Naimittika Rasayana interventions—including Withania somnifera, Tinospora cordifolia, and Commiphora mukul—which have demonstrated efficacy in modulating inflammatory pathways (NF-κB, AMPK) and reversing cellular senescence.
