Title

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENT TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS TEACHING PRACTICE IN LUSAKA DISTRICT

Abstract

This study examined the attitudes of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) student teachers towards teaching practice in selected colleges within Lusaka District. In a rapidly changing educational landscape, teacher attitudes play a crucial role in determining the quality of teaching and learning (Al-Salkhi, 2019). Using a normative survey method, data were collected from a randomly selected sample of 300 student teachers from four colleges. A personal data sheet and a standardized Teaching Practice Attitude Scale were employed to measure participants’ attitudes. The study analyzed attitude variations based on demographic and academic variables such as gender, age, marital status, educational qualification, subject specialization, family income, and parents’ occupations (Owusu & Mensah, 2024). Results revealed that most student teachers (54.66%) exhibited a high level of positive attitude towards teaching practice, while only 1.33% showed low attitudes (Kainti, 2023). Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in attitudes based on gender, marital status, locality of the college, subject of specialization, educational qualification, or undergraduate grade percentages. However, age, father’s occupation, mother’s occupation, and family monthly income had a significant influence on student teachers’ attitudes (Al-Salkhi, 2019). Younger students and those from lower-income families showed higher positive attitudes towards teaching practice (Chama et al., 2023). The study concludes that although the majority of student teachers possess positive attitudes toward teaching practice, socioeconomic and demographic factors influence these perceptions. Strengthening teacher preparation programmes and addressing contextual barriers may further enhance attitudes towards teaching practice.
