Title

EDUCATIONAL DISPARITIES AMONG TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IN UTTARAKHAND: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Abstract

Uttarakhand, also known as the “Land of the Gods,” is renowned for its cultural diversity and tribal communities. Various tribes such as the Bhotia, Tharu, Jaunsari, and Raji reside in this state, each known for their unique traditions and cultural identity. However, a significant gap in literacy rates is observed among these tribes, which becomes a major obstacle to their social and economic development. At present, the overall literacy rate of Uttarakhand is around 87%, but in many regions, the literacy rate among tribal communities is less than 50%. The low literacy levels among the Bhotia and Raji tribes, in particular, are a matter of serious concern. This situation is the result of various economic, geographical, and social factors, with lack of awareness about education and shortage of resources being the main reasons. There are also major challenges in the field of education, such as long distances to schools in mountainous regions, economic hardships, and a shortage of teachers. Due to these issues, tribal children are deprived of educational opportunities, which hinders their overall development. The government has implemented several schemes to promote tribal education, such as free education, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, and special scholarship programs. The purpose of these initiatives is to motivate tribal children toward education and bring them into the mainstream.
