Title

CONSTRUCTION AND STANDARDIZATION OF AN ACHIEVEMENT TEST IN SCIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

The study aimed to construct, validate, and standardize an Achievement Test in Science for high-school students. Drawing content from the Class IX science curriculum, the investigator initially prepared a pilot test comprising 52 multiple-choice items. A structured blueprint guided the selection of content areas and learning objectives, ensuring balanced representation across Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. The test was administered to a sample of 100 students, after which item analysis was conducted to examine item difficulty and discrimination power. Based on established criteria, 42 items were retained for the final version of the test. The reliability of the instrument was estimated through the split-half method and Spearman–Brown formula, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.80, indicating substantial internal consistency. Content validity was established through expert review by subject teachers and the research supervisor. Norms were developed using percentile values to categorize students into high, average, and low achievement groups. The developed tool demonstrates adequate psychometric properties and serves as a reliable assessment instrument for measuring science achievement among high-school learners.
