Abstract: As the research is centralized on teaching-learning problems in English language to student of Dakshina Kannada district and rural areas, the next section of the study presents a brief introduction to Karnataka state including its geography, culture, economy and its notable people up to the present time. Relating to this, the next topic gave an understanding on mother tongue interference in rural areas. The next section deals with the influence of mother tongue on the learning of English in rural areas. The topic of the thesis and the need for the study is detailed in the next section. The next section discusses in brief, the psychological and socio-economic problems faced by students of Karnataka in understanding English. The statement of the problem is presented formally in the next section and the final section explains the objectives and the scope of the study.
