Title

Smart Manhole Monitoring and Trash Collection System

Abstract

This project proposes the Smart Manhole Monitoring and Trash Collection System, a cost effective and socially relevant Internet of Things (IoT) solution designed for proactive urban infrastructure management, specifically for the needs of rapidly developing cities. The system utilizes an ESP32 Microcontroller to integrate comprehensive environmental monitoring via key sensors: an Ultrasonic Sensor for sewage level tracking, an MQ135 Sensor for critical Hazardous Gases (including CH4) detection, and a Tilt Sensor for manhole cover integrity, alongside a DHT11 for internal temperature and humidity readings. The core innovation addressing urban flooding is the automated debris management sub-system, where an IR Sensor detects solid waste and triggers a Servo Motor-driven Metal Mesh filter to proactively remove and collect trash, preventing sewer blockages. Crucially for efficient municipal response, the system ensures immediate communication: critical hazard notifications (e.g., overflow, gas leaks) are delivered via a normal SMS alert using the GSM Module directly to the concerned authority. Concurrently, all time-stamped sensor data is logged on the Thing Speak cloud platform, providing automated graphs and a reliable historical dataset essential for predictive maintenance, resource optimization, and future R&D. Furthermore, a local LCD displays status, fostering active citizen participation and ensuring swift incident reporting. This project promises to significantly enhance worker safety, reduce municipal maintenance costs, and contribute to the goal of cleaner, safer smart cities.
