The given paper is dedicated to the advanced interplay between magic and reality in the books of Isabel Allende, Italo Calvino, and Haruki Murakami, who though belonging to various cultural and literary traditions are preoccupied with the dissolving of the boundaries between the real and fantastic. And based on the Latin American heritage of magical realism, Allende weaves together history, memory and myth to explain lived realities of political struggle and individual survival. Calvino uses meta-fiction and postmodern experimentation to create alternative realities in which narrative as such is a place of magic change. Murakami, based on the Japanese cultural themes and the world, injects surreal dream worlds into the normal world showing the unseen weirdness of the present day life. In comparing these authors, the paper holds that their writing, as a whole, shows how literature can defy strict divisions of reality and provide alternative versions of truth, as well as ways in which literature can connect the material with the metaphysical. The paper places the comparative analysis contextually in theoretical discussion of magical realism, postmodern narrative and surrealism and concludes by proposing that the thread of magic and reality are not a line of demarcation but rather a continuum in world literature.
