Title

Harmony of Silence in Amitav Ghosh's The Hungry Tide

Abstract

Amitav Gosh's The Hungry Tide novel is set in a place called as Sundarbans, describing a broad range of relationships between nature and people and also showing the interconnected relationship of people, animals, tides, and the environment (Ghosh). It is an argument of ecological stability, environmental morals cultural survival and it's a place where the life of the people is controlled by the tides (Sharma). The story analyzes the deep connection of ecology, history, and emotions through characters like Kanai Dutt, Piyali Roy, and Fokir. Additionally, Ghosh's captivating portrayal of the Sundarbans' beauty, its nature, tides, man-eating tigers, and mangroves indicate that the readers admit the ecological imbalance of the Sundarbans (Dudhatra 265). His story highlights the importance of respecting nature and its limits. He insists on living in the shadows of nature rather than controlling it. This essay examines the non-verbal connection between the characters of Piya, a marine biologist, and Fokir, an illiterate fisherman. In gist, The Hungry Tide emphasizes the deep bond formed without the need for spoken language and highlights mutual understanding through gestures alone, much like harmony in music.
