Since the inception of theatre, space has always been given an important role. The theatrical experience is impossible without a site for performance. Theatre spaces have undergone changes with the passage of time due to various social, ideological and theatrical influences. In this paper, I will study how space not only functions as a backdrop to the action but can also becomes a key element in the dramatic evolution of a character in the play The Verge. Glaspell’s characters will be analysed as geopathic where space becomes a problem for the character. I will discuss how the space used in this play becomes symbolic of the protagonist’s repression and alienation. Glaspell used spaces as important markers to show the dichotomy between inside/outside, personal/public and the subversion of the gendered power relation between those spaces and this will be discussed with reference to plays such as The Verge. In my paper I will analyze how her use of different spaces could be related to the calculated reversal of viewpoint which makes the reader/audience see things from a woman’s perspective.
