Herbs are used as medicine from time immemorial. In India, Ayurvedic medicine is popular which treats various disorders by using different herbs and minerals. Triphala ( three myrobalan ) is used very frequently as a important ingredient or as alone in the management of various disorders. Bibhitaka ( Terminalia bellirica ) is an ingredient of Triphala. Bibhitaka phala is Kashaya rasayukta, Laghu, Rooksha guna, ushna viryayukta, Madhura vipaka, Tridoshahara and especially Kaphashamaka. It is having actions such as Bhedana, Virechana, Kaphahara, expectorant, Madaka and trichogenic. Triphala is commonly used in diseases like Vibandha, Adhmana, Anaha, Atopa, Amlapitta, Arshas, Netra roga, Arbuda, Hyperacidity syndrome, Cancer, Mukha paka, Chronic non-healing ulcers of the skin and Kamala roga. Formulations like Triphala tablets, Triphala Kwatha, Triphala choorna, Phalatrikadi Kashaya, Triphala ghrita, Avipattikara choorna, are containing Bibhitaka as an ingredient. In this paper, therapeutic uses of Bibhitaka are discussed in a scientific and experiential view.
