Title

Analysis of Symbolism and Historical Depiction in Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol

Abstract

This paper deals with Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol (2009) in symbolic and Historical aspects with Robert Langton, the Protagonist's journey to find murder and to save his life from the thread. This novel is embellished with several symbolic depictions derived from factual information. The results suggest that the components of representation, interpretant, and object have a substantial impact on defining the narrative structure of the tale. Moreover, through the examination of four symbols, thematic implications are conveyed. The hand symbolically connects Robert Langdon, Mal'akh, and their shared mission to unveil the long-forgotten sign. Katherine Solomon embodies both the destructive nature of falsehood and the role of a saviour of truth, with water serving as a symbol of cleanliness. Finally, Mal'akh symbolises the embodiment of Icarus. The symbols are also studied in myth and storytelling styles. The study indicates that Mal'akh is portrayed as a manifestation of psychopathy. Thus, this event marked the beginning of Brown's ascent to infamy as the most controversial author of the 21st century.
