The Travancore Royal Family occupies an important place in the social and cultural history of South India. From the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the rulers contributed to the development of education, literature, music, arts, public health, scientific institutions, social reform and cultural heritage. Maharaja Swathi Thirunal promoted Carnatic and Hindustani music, encouraged English education, established the Government Press and supported scientific institutions, reflecting the interaction between tradition and modern knowledge. During the reigns of Ayilyam Thirunal and Sree Moolam Thirunal, schools, colleges and professional institutions expanded, along with Sanskrit, Ayurveda, legal and women’s education. The Regency of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi and the reign of Sree Chithira Thirunal further strengthened education, welfare and social reform. The Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936 marked a significant step against caste-based exclusion. However, missionaries, social reformers, community organisations and popular movements also shaped Travancore’s transformation. Thus, modern Travancore emerged through the interaction of royal initiatives, administrative reforms and wider social movements.
