The woman Saint Akkamahadevi is a confluence of devotion, mystical knowledge and renunciation in the history of India in general and Karnataka in particular. The 12th century Karnataka witnessed a turbulence in socio-economic milieu. Materialism was creeping in and posed a threat to the complacent society although social evils plagued the laity. The place Kalyana was the hub of commerce in the then society. The rich were becoming richer and poor were becoming poorer. Caste system was being practised rigorously which impinged the social mobility to the lower castes. ‘Development' and commerce were gaining momentum at the cost of nature. It is at this juncture that Vachana Movement in Karnataka came to the rescue of nature and resorted to its spiritual aspects to restrict materialism and reform the society.
