Title

INVESTIGATING THE LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE OF PORTFOLIOS MANAGED WITH ETHICAL OR SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING PRINCIPLES

Abstract

ABSTRACT Social or ethical investing (SRI) has become a more and more popular trend in modern portfolio management as investors pursue an adjustment of the financial goals according to the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. This paper analytically examines the performance of portfolios operated in accordance with the principles of ethical or socially responsible investment in the long term with the emphasis on the performance in terms of returns, riskiness, and the stability of the performance. The study is descriptive and analytical in nature as it is completely based on secondary data, which is in the form of investment report, fund disclosure, and published financial data. There was a sample of 110 ethical portfolios which were systematically categorised based on investment strategy, long-term returns category, riskiness and stability of performance. The analysis uses frequency and percentages methods to establish the prevailing patterns of performance without using a survey-based data or perceptions. The results show that a significant percentage of the ethical portfolios attain high to moderate long term returns combined with managing the exposure of risks and ensuring stable returns throughout the long term of investments. The paper concludes that ethical investing does not seem to require any trade-off between values and financial performance and can be an effective, durable and competitive portfolio management strategy in the contemporary financial markets.
