Title

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING HEALTH HAZARDS OF USING MOBILE PHONES AMONG SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN

Authors

Abstract

Abstract Background: Mobile phone usage among school going children has increased significantly in recent years. Prolonged and inappropriate use of mobile phones exposes children to various physical, psychological, and behavioral health hazards. Structured educational interventions may help improve awareness and promote safe usage practices. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Programme (STP) on knowledge regarding health hazards of using mobile phones among school going children. Methods: A quantitative quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was adopted. Sixty school going children aged 6–12 years were selected using convenience sampling technique from Marutham Matric Higher Secondary School, Dharmapuri. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire. A Structured Teaching Programme on mobile phone health hazards was administered. Descriptive statistics and paired t test were used for data analysis. Results: The mean pretest knowledge score was 10.75 ± 2.30, which increased to 20.57 ± 2.20 in the posttest. The paired t test revealed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge after the intervention (t = 19.64, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The Structured Teaching Programme was highly effective in improving knowledge regarding health hazards of mobile phone usage among school going children. Regular school-based educational programmes are recommended to promote safe and responsible mobile phone use.
