Title

Perspective: Role of Biochar in Sustainable Water Purification

Authors

Abstract

Ensuring access to clean and safe water remains a critical sustainability challenge as global waste generation and water pollution continue to rise in parallel. Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced through the thermochemical conversion of biomass under oxygen-limited conditions, has emerged as a promising, low-cost, and environmentally sustainable material for water purification. This letter highlights the growing potential of biochar for removing a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals, organic pollutants, and excess nutrients, while simultaneously supporting waste valorisation and circular economy objectives. Recent statistics indicate that approximately 4 billion tonnes of waste are generated globally each year, with 30–45 % comprising organic biomass suitable for conversion into biochar; however, less than 10 % of this resource is currently utilised through waste-to-biochar pathways. Typical biomass-to-biochar conversion yields range from ~22–60 %, depending on feedstock and process conditions, underscoring the scalability of this approach. Beyond pollutant removal, biochar production contributes to carbon sequestration and offers co-benefits for climate change mitigation. Despite these advantages, challenges related to material heterogeneity, long-term performance, and end-of-life management remain. Addressing these gaps through targeted research and policy support could accelerate the integration of biochar into sustainable and decentralized water treatment systems.
