Title

Roadside Plastic Garbage: A Major Environmental Problem

Abstract

Abstract Roadside plastic garbage has become a major environmental concern due to its persistence, ubiquity, and ecological impact. This study assessed the types, sources, and consequences of plastic litter along urban, peri-urban, and rural roads. Field surveys conducted over three months revealed that plastic bags and food wrappers were the most abundant items, especially near markets, bus stops, and highways. Roadside plastics contribute to blocked drainage systems, soil degradation, water pollution, and pose threats to wildlife through ingestion and entanglement. Over time, larger plastics break down into microplastics, entering terrestrial and aquatic food chains and impacting ecosystem and human health. Effective mitigation strategies include regular waste collection, promotion of biodegradable alternatives, public awareness campaigns, and strict policy enforcement to reduce littering. Addressing roadside plastic pollution is critical for ecosystem sustainability, public hygiene, and urban development. This study highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts by authorities, communities, and individuals to minimize plastic waste along roadsides and protect the environment.
