Title

A Partial Replacement of Coarse Aggregate by Coconut Shell in Concrete

Abstract

The rapid growth of the construction industry has resulted in excessive consumption of natural aggregates, leading to environmental degradation and depletion of resources. This study investigates the feasibility of using coconut shell as a partial replacement for conventional coarse aggregate in concrete. Coconut shell, an agricultural waste material, is lightweight, durable, and abundantly available in tropical regions such as India. Concrete mixes of M20 grade were prepared with varying percentages of coconut shell replacement (10%, 20%, and 30%) by volume of coarse aggregate. Experimental investigations were carried out to evaluate workability and compressive strength at 7, 14, and 28 days of curing. The results indicate that coconut shell concrete exhibits reduced density and satisfactory strength characteristics, particularly at 10–15% replacement levels. The study concludes that coconut shell can be effectively utilized as a sustainable alternative material in lightweight and non-structural concrete applications.
