Title

Identification Of Students With Dysgraphia At Elementary Level

Abstract

Dysgraphia is considered as a type of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) that affects the ability of a child to express his/her ideas or thoughts in written format. It is closely related to spelling errors, lack of fine motor skills in writing, reverse letters, improper alignment, etc. The present survey-based study conducted to identify the students with dysgraphia (students with writing problems) at elementary schools of Cuttack District. A sample of 150 students (N=150) were selected from 5 different elementary schools of Cuttack District of Odisha through a Purposive Sampling Technique. The data was collected through a self-developed tool, named Identification of students with Dysgraphia, followed by Teacher Observation Checklist, to identify the students who have writing problems. Data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively using percentage calculations and thick descriptions. Findings revealed that about 28% of students were facing problems in handwriting, spelling and written expression. Their handwriting were messy and incomplete, insufficient space between words or sentences, mirror writing, having problems while copying tasks, etc. Early detection of this type of difficulty is essential for the teachers as well as the parents to give them proper interventions for their improvement.
