The rapid expansion of social media has profoundly disrupted journalism’s role as a trusted public institution by accelerating the production and circulation of misinformation. This paper critically examines the phenomenon of information disorder, misinformation, disinformation and mal-information and analyses the structural, technological and economic mechanisms through which social media platforms amplify false and misleading content. With a particular focus on mobile journalism in India, the study evaluates ethical challenges, audience impacts and the erosion of public trust, while assessing constitutional jurisprudence and regulatory frameworks. It argues for proportionate, rights-based regulation, ethical self-regulation and platform accountability to restore journalistic credibility without undermining freedom of expression.
