Abstract
The present paper deals on taxonomic status of ca. 17 species of genus Swertia L. in
Uttarakhand, India. The genus shows maximum diversity in temperate, subtropical, and
montane tropical regions. The maximum diversity of the species lies in the Western
Himalayan region to North Eastern Himalayan region. They are widely occurring in the
provinces like Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir,
Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu (Nilgiri
hills), Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal which have very rich species diversity of Swertia.
In India and other countries such as Bhutan, China, Japan, and Nepal, several Swertia
species are traditionally valued for their anthelmintic, antipyretic, anti-tubercular,
hypoglycemic, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. They are widely used in
folk medicine for the treatment of malaria, liver disorders, gastric ailments, jaundice,
diabetes, hepatitis, joint pain, boils, gall bladder disorder and other health conditions.
Phytoetymology of these plants, helps to make a bonding between human and plant through
their known word root, which conserve the medicinal flora and identifies the plants of this
region.
