Title

THERAPEUTIC PROFILING OF Ipomoea obscura (THIRUTHALI) POWDER

Abstract

Traditional medicinal plants continue to serve as valuable sources of bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic applications. Ipomoea obscura (L.) Ker Gawl., commonly known as Lakshmana in Ayurveda, has been traditionally used in powdered form for the management of inflammatory disorders, wounds, infections, and other ailments; however, scientific validation of its efficacy remains limited. The present study aimed to develop Ipomoea obscura plant powder and evaluate its physicochemical characteristics and therapeutic properties, with emphasis on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticervical cancer activities. Fresh plants were collected, shade-dried, pulverised, and processed into a uniform powder. Proximate analysis revealed low moisture content (6.7%), moderate carbohydrate content (33.22%), and measurable fat content (7.7%), indicating good storage stability and nutritional relevance. Total antioxidant activity assessed by the phosphomolybdenum method demonstrated appreciable free-radical-scavenging potential. Anti-inflammatory activity, evaluated using the protein denaturation assay, showed concentration-dependent inhibition, supporting its traditional use in inflammatory conditions. Anticancer activity assessed by the MTT assay on HeLa cervical cancer cells revealed a gradual, dose-dependent reduction in cell viability, with an IC₅₀ value exceeding 100 µg/mL, indicating low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Overall, the findings provide scientific support for the nutritional and therapeutic potential of Ipomoea obscura plant powder and highlight its promise as a natural, plant-based adjunct for health promotion. Further in vivo and clinical studies are warranted to substantiate its therapeutic applications.
