Psychological characteristics play a vital role in determining athletic performance, particularly at the national level where competitive demands are high. Athletes and para-athletes are required to manage pressure, sustain motivation, maintain concentration and regulate emotions to achieve optimal performance. The purpose of this paper is to descriptively review and discuss selected psychological characteristics of national-level athletes and para-athletes, including mental toughness, sport self-confidence, motivation, competitive anxiety, concentration and emotional regulation. This conceptual and descriptive review is grounded in established theoretical frameworks and previous literature in sports psychology, without the use of empirical data or statistical analysis. The paper aims to strengthen understanding of psychological preparation as a foundation for elite and inclusive sport development.
