Navin Chandra Rai (circa 1837–1890) emerged as a significant yet under-studied figure in the socio-religious reform movements of nineteenth-century British India. An ardent follower of the Brahmo Samaj, Rai engaged deeply with the pressing social and religious questions of his time, advocating for rational religion, equality, education reform, and linguistic nationalism. This paper examines Rai’s social concerns—especially his critique of caste and orthodoxy—and his religious engagements, aimed at harmonizing spiritual rationality with social progress. By situating Rai’s interventions within the wider reform milieu of colonial India, this study highlights his contributions to early Hindi social literature and educational movements, revealing the tensions and possibilities of negotiating tradition and modernity
