Title

The Partition, Scheduled Caste Politics in Bengal and the role of Jogendranath Mandal and others

Authors

Abstract

This paper analyses the history of the rise of the Scheduled Castes in the political context of colonial Bengal and their gradual marginalisation as a result of the partition. Between 1937 and 1946, the lower castes emerged as a powerful and decisive force in Bengali politics under the leadership of Jogendranath Mandal and other Scheduled Caste leaders. Especially under the efforts of Jogendranath Mandal, B.R. Ambedkar was elected to the Constituent Assembly and the struggle for rights through the Dalit-Muslim political equation gained a new dimension. However, the partition of 1947 severely damaged this united movement. The article tries to show that in the post partition period, the Scheduled Caste people who came from East Bengal were transformed from Scheduled caste to Refugees and their political power was gradually reduced. So, this study challenges the motion of caste less politics in West Bengal, demonstrating that the geographical and political upheavals created by partition dampened the powerful Scheduled Caste movement in West Bengal.
