Title

Effective Ayurvedic Management of Hair Fall: A Case Study Demonstrating Follicular Regeneration

Abstract

Khalitya, described under Kshudra Roga in Ayurveda, corresponds to hair fall and closely parallels baldness and alopecia documented in modern dermatology. Hair fall among young adults is increasingly reported and often impacts both physical appearance and psychosocial well-being. In this case, a 26-year-old college-going female student presented to an Ayurveda hospital with complaints of progressive hair fall and scalp itching for the past three years. She had been otherwise healthy, but her initially mild hair shedding gradually worsened over time. Clinical and trichoscopic examinations revealed dryness, roughness, thinning of hair, and pallor. Based on these observations, the condition was assessed and managed as Khalitya according to Ayurvedic principles. Ayurvedic pathogenesis attributes Khalitya to aggravated Vata and Pitta entering the Romakoopa (~hair follicles) and weakening the hair roots, followed by obstruction by Kapha and Rakta that impairs regrowth. Treatment was therefore planned with a focus on Dosha-Prasamana (pacification of aggravated doshas), Rakta-Prasadana (~blood purification), dhatu-poshana (~tissue nourishment), and rasayana chikitsa (~rejuvenation). The patient demonstrated significant clinical improvement, including marked reduction in hair fall, increased thickness of hair follicles, relief from itching, and overall enhancement of scalp health. No adverse effects were observed during the treatment period. This case highlights the therapeutic potential of classical Ayurvedic management in effectively and safely addressing Khalitya and related scalp disorders.
