Ayurveda emphasizes the maintenance of health through proper regulation of natural bodily urges, known as Vega. Suppression of these urges (Vegadharana) is considered an important etiological factor for many diseases. Classical Ayurvedic texts, especially Charaka Samhita, describe the types of natural urges, their physiological importance, and the adverse health effects resulting from their suppression. In the present era of stressful lifestyles, altered work schedules, and unhealthy habits, Vegadharana has become increasingly common, leading to various functional and structural disorders. This review aims to critically analyze the concept of Vegadharana, its classification, and its health consequences as described in classical Ayurvedic literature.
