Abstract The Paik System was a distinct administrative and socio-economic framework of the Ahom Dynasty in Assam that was pivotal in governance, military structuring, and agricultural management. Within this system, all able-bodied adult men were recorded as paiks and mandated to provide mandatory service to the state rather than paying taxes in money. Structured into rotating teams known as gots. Paiks supplied labor for agriculture, defense, public works, and crafts, maintaining a consistent workforce without interfering with food production. The system enhanced state authority, encouraged social order, and allowed the Ahom leaders to sustain a powerful military and stable economy for multiple centuries. Nonetheless, as time passed, administrative misuse, population stress, and social-political turmoil undermined the Paik System, causing its slow deterioration and aiding in the collapse of Ahom control in Assam. This paper attempts to clarify the significance of the Paik system in managing the Ahom kingdom.
