Credit cards were introduced to reduce the use of cash for financial transactions. Even before it could percolate to every section of the population, Unified Payment Interface (UPI)was introduced. Multiple factors have accelerated the acceptance of UPI over credit cards. Accessability of UPI with mobile phones, Affordability of mobile phones, lower or no transaction costs, increased security has contributed to the growth of subscription to UPI. An attempt has been made in this paper to study the impact of UPI on the payments made using credit cards. This research has been conducted in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. An attempt has been made to gauge the reasons for the growing popularity of UPI than credit cards.
