Title

Problems of Translation in the Documentation and Publication of Indigenous Folktales

Authors

Abstract

Indigenous folktales are vital repositories of a community’s collective memory, worldview, moral values, and cultural identity. However, recording and translating these oral narratives into dominant or global languages for publication pose significant challenges. Translation is not merely a linguistic exercise but a complex cultural negotiation involving meaning, symbolism, emotion, and context. This article examines the major problems encountered in translating indigenous folktales for publication, focusing on issues of semantic loss, cultural untranslatability, narrative distortion, and power imbalance. Based on secondary sources, the study analyses how translation affects the authenticity and integrity of indigenous narratives and offers recommendations for culturally sensitive and ethical translation practices.

Key Words
