Title

Influence of Manufacturing Parameters on Lithium Plating in Lithium-Ion Batteries: Mechanisms, Diagnostics and Mitigation Strategies

Abstract

Lithium plating is a major degradation and safety concern in lithium-ion batteries, particularly under fast-charging and low-temperature conditions. While extensive studies have focused on operational factors leading to lithium plating, the influence of upstream manufacturing parameters remains insufficiently explored. In this work, lithium plating is investigated from a battery manufacturing perspective, emphasizing electrode fabrication, calendering, electrolyte wetting, and formation protocols. Graphite-based anodes with controlled microstructural variations were evaluated using electrochemical diagnostics such as differential voltage analysis, incremental capacity analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Post-mortem characterization using electron microscopy was employed to confirm lithium deposition. The study establishes clear correlations between manufacturing-induced microstructural heterogeneity and lithium plating propensity. The findings provide practical manufacturing-level strategies to mitigate lithium plating, enabling safer operation and enhanced fast-charging capability in lithium-ion batteries.
