Title

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF SHUSHKASHIPAKA (DRY EYE SYNDROME) IN A MENOPAUSAL WOMAN: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Background: Shushkashipaka, described under Sarvagata Netra Roga in Ayurveda, shows close clinical similarity with Dry Eye Syndrome, a chronic ocular surface disorder frequently observed in menopausal women. Hormonal changes during menopause result in tear film instability, ocular dryness, and surface inflammation. Ayurveda explains this condition through Vata vriddhi, dhatu kshaya, and depletion of netra sneha, which become prominent during the menopausal phase. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of an Ayurvedic treatment protocol in the management of Shushkashipaka associated with menopause. Materials and Methods: A 48-year-old menopausal female presenting with symptoms of ocular dryness, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, and visual fatigue was treated using a systematic Ayurvedic approach. The intervention included Nasya with Panchendriya Vardhana Taila, followed by Tarpana with Patoladi Ghrita. Internal administration of Shatavari Ghrita was given to address systemic dryness and hormonal imbalance. Follow-up therapy included Saptamrita Loha and Aschyotana with Patoladi Ghrita. Clinical assessment was based on improvement in subjective symptoms and ocular comfort. Results: Marked improvement was observed in dryness, burning sensation, irritation, and visual fatigue following treatment. Sustained symptom relief was noted during follow-up, indicating restoration of ocular lubrication and tear film stability. Conclusion: The Ayurvedic management protocol effectively addressed both systemic and local factors involved in menopausal Dry Eye Syndrome. Therapies aimed at Vata-Pitta shamana, restoration of netra sneha, and rasayana support offer a holistic and sustainable approach in the management of Shushkashipaka.
