Abstract
Guggulu (Commiphora wrightii) is a drug which is commonly used in conditions associated with pain and diseases like dyslipidaemia and coronary artery disease. The resin is used after processing in the management of various disorders by physicians all over the world. Guggulu is usually used as an important ingredient of many formulations. It has thyroid-stimulating action and corrects increased levels of cholesterol in patients. It has actions like Ushna, Lekhana, Rasayana, Vedana sthapana, Dipana, Krimighna, hypocholesteremic, antiatherogenic, thrombolytic, anti-infective, antibacterial and bactericidal actions.
The formulations like Yogaraja guggulu, Mahayogaraja guggulu, Kaishora guggulu, Trayodashanga guggulu, Navaka guggulu, Amritadi guggulu, Medohara guggulu, Triphala guggulu, Ekonavimshati guggulu, Kanchanara guggulu, Rasnadi guggulu, Laxa guggulu, Simhanada guggulu, Punarnavadi guggulu, Chandraprabha vati, Guggulu tiktaka kashaya and Panchatikta ghrita guggulu contain Guggulu as a main ingredient.
In diseases like Janu Sandhigata Vata, lumbar spondylosis, cervical spondylosis, sciatica syndrome, ischaemic heart disease, hemiplegia, frozen shoulder, chronic non-healing ulcer, dyslipidaemia, hypothyroidism, old myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis and fistula in ano, Guggulu formulations are effective.
The present paper highlights the clinical indications of Guggulu (Commiphora wrightii) from a scientific and experiential view.
